The town of Mwanza was established in 1892 as an Administrative Center and Business Center to control the production of cotton in the Lake Victoria region. In 1978 Mwanza got the status of a Municipality according to the Local Government structure established in 1972. In 2000, Mwanza was further developed to have the status of a City. This is the second city after Dar es Salaam. The town of Mwanza is located on the southern shores of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania.

The total area is 256.45km2 of which 184.90km2 (2/3 of the total area) is dry land and the other area is covered by water. Of the dry land area, it has an area of ​​184,90 square meters, approximately 94% is urban while the remaining areas consist of forested land, cultivated valleys, grasslands and degraded mountain areas.

The city of Mwanza sits at an altitude of 1,140 meters above sea level. It has a temperature between 25.7OC and 30.2OC in the summer and 15.4oC and 18.6OC in the winter months. The 2016 population is estimated at 459,565 people. The population of Mwanza city is around 800,000 people during the day.
