The Aqua-Farms Organization (AFO) has been in existence since 2016 and was officially registered in July 2017 under the NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 of the United Republic of Tanzania. It was founded by 13 members with the goal of promoting development and food security through sustainable, eco-friendly aquaculture practices and the revitalization of fisheries.
AFO is dedicated to supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically: No Poverty (Goal 1), Zero Hunger (Goal 2), Good Health and Well-being (Goal 3), Climate Action (Goal 13), and Life Below Water (Goal 14). The organization aims to be a leading entity in replenishing aquatic resources through community-based conservation and sustainable aquaculture. AFO works to improve food accessibility and income generation for communities through research, training, workshops, and partnerships in aquaculture and fisheries.
As an open-source NGO, AFO operates transparently, sharing its values, mission, and both successes and challenges encountered. The organization values diversity and inclusivity, ensuring all members have a voice and influence. It upholds high standards for accurate information and practices, and is willing to adapt and revise strategies if something is not working effectively.
