The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) was founded in 2010, a time when human rights violations in Tanzania were relatively widespread. While there were already human rights organizations (HROs) in the country, many of which are now part of THRDC, these organizations and their networks—operating at national, regional, and district levels—focused on human rights protection and promotion.
However, none of them specifically addressed the challenges faced by human rights defenders (HRDs). As threats to HRDs became increasingly visible and tangible, the need for an organization dedicated to defending their rights became clear.
In response, around fourteen HROs came together to form a loose network in 2010, with the goal of creating a unified voice on HRDs’ issues. In 2012, this network officially became THRDC, registering as a legal entity under Tanzanian law. This registration marked the beginning of a focused effort to protect and promote the rights of HRDs in Tanzania.
