CARE began its operations in Tanzania in April 1994, responding to the crisis in Rwanda and the resulting influx of refugees into the Kagera Region in Northwestern Tanzania. Over the years, CARE Tanzania has developed innovative programs in education, health, microfinance, and the environment across most regions of the country.
In collaboration with the Government of Tanzania (both mainland and Zanzibar) and other partners, CARE works to transform communities, promoting financial inclusion and independence, improving health and nutrition, and building climate-smart development resilience, with a particular focus on women and girls. CARE is a leading humanitarian organization committed to fighting poverty and social injustice, with a strong focus on empowering women and girls to lead their communities out of poverty.
In 2020, CARE operated in 104 countries, reaching 90 million people through over 1,300 programs, supported by an annual budget of $650 million.
