The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is an Executive Agency under the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), established by Section 3 (1) of the Executive Agencies Act (Cap. 245) through Government Notice No. 211 published on May 12, 2017. It officially commenced operations on July 2, 2017. TARURA is responsible for managing the development, rehabilitation, maintenance, axle load control, and environmental and road reserve management of both rural and urban road networks, contributing to the socio-economic development of Tanzania.
The Prime Minister has instructed TARURA to eliminate the widespread corruption in bidding processes, particularly in road projects, ensuring that only qualified contractors are chosen through fair, competitive bidding.
Additionally, TARURA has been urged to improve contract management between contractors and the agency, focusing on transparency in all public works agreements. The agency plays a crucial role in boosting agricultural production by improving access to markets for exports, thereby supporting economic growth.
