TAZAMA Pipelines Limited was established in 1968. The pipeline extends from the Single Point Mooring terminal at the outer anchorage in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, to the Tanzanian and Italian Petroleum Refining Company (TIPER) refinery in Dar-es-Salaam and the Indeni refinery in Ndola, Zambia. It was commissioned in 1968 with a capacity of 22,000 barrels per day. The pipeline is owned by Tazama Pipeline Limited, a joint venture between the governments of Zambia (66.7%) and Tanzania (33.3%).
The total length of the pipeline is 1,710 kilometers, divided into two main sections: one 954 kilometers long with an 8-inch diameter and the other 798 kilometers long with a 12-inch diameter. It has seven pumping stations, five in Tanzania and two in Zambia. By November 2016, both the Tanzanian and Zambian governments had discussed either modernizing the aging pipeline or constructing a new pipeline parallel to the original one.
The proposed project aims to improve the transportation of crude oil, refined oil, and natural gas. In May 2020, Tazama Pipeline announced plans to secure a $400 million loan for the expansion of the 954-kilometer, 8-inch section of the pipeline.
