Tobacco Cooperative Joint Enterprises Limited (TCJE Limited) was founded under the Cooperative Societies Act No. 6 of 2013 as a Joint Enterprise aimed at supporting the tobacco industry and advancing the economic interests of its members. This includes activities such as tobacco marketing, agricultural supplies, and all matters related to the development of tobacco in the affiliated Secondary Societies, following Cooperative Principles and Practices.
The origins of the Tobacco Board date back to the 1960s when the government set up the Tanganyika Tobacco Board. In 1970, the government of the United Republic of Tanzania established the Tobacco Authority of Tanzania (TAT), which was transformed in 1984 into the Tanzania Tobacco Processing and Marketing Board.
In 1993, this board was restructured to form the Tanzania Tobacco Board (TTB) after the privatization of the tobacco sector, a process that reached its height in 1997 when the government ceased to finance the Tobacco Board’s activities. The current board was established following the Tobacco Industry Act, No. 24 of 2001, as amended in 2009.
