CARE began its operations in Tanzania in April 1994, initially responding to the Rwandan crisis and the resulting influx of refugees into the Kagera Region in the northwest. Since then, CARE Tanzania has expanded its efforts across the country, implementing innovative programs in education, health, microfinance, and environmental sustainability.

The organization collaborates with the Government of Tanzania—both on the mainland and in Zanzibar—as well as with various partners to empower communities, promote financial inclusion and independence, improve health and nutrition, and strengthen climate-resilient development, with a particular focus on supporting women and girls.
