Moshi District Council is an administrative entity located in the Kilimanjaro Region of northeastern Tanzania. Established in January 1984 under the Local Government (District Authorities) Act of 1982, the council serves as a vital governance and development hub for the region. It encompasses 32 wards, 157 villages, and 683 hamlets, with a population of approximately 535,803 people as of the latest census . The district is bordered by Rombo District to the north, Hai District to the west, Mwanga District and Kenya to the east, and the Arusha Region to the south.
The council’s administrative structure includes 43 elected councilors, representing the diverse communities within its jurisdiction. The Moshi District Council is committed to improving the quality of life for its residents through various development initiatives. In the health sector, the council has implemented over 136 planned intervention activities, leading to enhanced healthcare services, increased availability of medicines and medical supplies, and a reduction in maternal mortality rates.
Additionally, more than 75% of the population has access to safe drinking water, and there has been a significant increase in electricity coverage, now just above 20% of the population. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including inadequate obstetric care equipment, low membership in the Community Health Fund, and a shortage of skilled healthcare workers.
