Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is one of Africa’s leading health research institutions, known for its strong legacy in developing, testing, and validating innovative health solutions. Our mission is rooted in research, training, and service delivery, covering the entire spectrum—from basic science to policy implementation and practical application.
IHI’s work is structured across three main research departments: Environmental Health & Ecological Sciences, Interventions & Clinical Trials, and Health Systems, Impact Evaluation & Policy. Supporting these are six specialized research units, including Grants and Contracts, Training & Capacity Building, Laboratories, Data Systems and Platforms, Vector Control Product Testing, and Chronic Diseases Clinics.
In addition, seven technical units play a vital role in supporting our research activities. These include Internal Audit, Knowledge Management and Communications, Finance, Human Resources, Procurement, Branch Management, and Information & Communication Technology (ICT). IHI operates from three main locations in Tanzania: Ifakara, Bagamoyo, and Dar es Salaam. Our vision is to build and maintain a district-focused health research institute that drives the creation of knowledge to inform public health policies and actions.
