NBC Bank Limited is Tanzania’s longest-serving bank, with over 50 years of experience in the financial sector. The bank’s history dates back to 1967, following the nationalization of all financial institutions by the Tanzanian Government.
In 1991, reforms were introduced to the banking sector, paving the way for change. By 2000, a majority share in NBC was acquired by Absa Group Limited, a leading financial services provider based in South Africa. The Tanzanian Government retained a 30% stake, while the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, took a 15% share. This marked the beginning of NBC Limited as a new entity.
