Abdulrahman Al-Sumait University, also known as Sumait University, evolved from the former University College of Education Zanzibar (UCEZ), which was founded in 1998 by the Kuwait-based charity Africa Muslims Agency (AMA/Direct Aid), established in 1981. The University is owned by AMA/Direct Aid and named after its founder, Dr. Abdulrahman Hamoud Al-Sumait (1947–2013), a notable physician, philanthropist, educator, and author.

Situated in Chukwani, Zanzibar, the University is located about 5.5 km from the Old Stone Town seaport, 2.5 km from Abeid Karume International Airport, and just 150 meters from the Indian Ocean. It sits on a 120,000-square-meter plot provided by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and is surrounded by lush greenery and blooming flowers.
