Job vacancies at LVFO, May 2025

The Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) is a specialized agency under the East African Community (EAC), tasked with overseeing the sustainable management and development of fisheries and aquaculture resources across the EAC region. Established in 1994 through a formal Convention and recognized under the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Charter (CAP 102), LVFO plays a central role in regional fisheries governance.

The concept of a unified body to manage Lake Victoria’s fisheries dates back to 1928, focusing initially on the three countries bordering the lake—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This led to the creation of the Lake Victoria Fisheries Service, and later, from 1947 to 1977, the East African Fresh Water Fisheries Research Organization, which ceased operations following the dissolution of the original East African Community.

Following this, the FAO’s Sub-Committee on Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture assumed coordination until the LVFO was formally founded in 1994. In 2016, the founding Convention was revised to broaden the organization’s mandate, adding Burundi and Rwanda to the original member states.
