Katavi Regional Referral Hospital, located on Rungwa Street in Kazima Ward, Mpanda Municipal Council, Tanzania, serves as a pivotal healthcare institution in the newly established Katavi Region. Established in July 2018 under the Ministry of Health, the hospital was upgraded from a district hospital to a regional referral hospital, aligning with the government’s initiative to enhance healthcare accessibility across the country . The hospital’s development commenced in 2019 with the acquisition of a 30.91-hectare plot, leading to the construction of essential facilities, including maternity wards, emergency departments, outpatient services, radiology, and laboratory buildings.
By February 2023, the hospital began offering services, with ongoing construction to expand its capacity The Tanzanian government has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving healthcare in Katavi, allocating substantial funds for the hospital’s development. In the 2021/22 financial year, approximately 5 billion Tanzanian shillings were designated for construction, with an additional 8 billion shillings earmarked for purchasing medical equipment and furniture .
President Samia Suluhu Hassan has emphasized the importance of quality healthcare services, expressing satisfaction with the hospital’s progress and the modern medical equipment available . The hospital’s expansion reflects the government’s dedication to providing equitable healthcare services to all citizens, particularly in underserved regions like Katavi.
