The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) of Tanzania is a constitutional body established under Article 112 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania. It is tasked with ensuring the independence, efficiency, and integrity of the judiciary by overseeing the appointment, discipline, and removal of judicial officers. The JSC’s primary functions include advising the President on the appointment of High Court judges, handling disciplinary matters concerning judges, and managing the appointment and discipline of magistrates and court registrars.

Additionally, it is responsible for establishing various committees to aid in the implementation of its functions. The composition of the JSC is defined by the Constitution and includes the Chief Justice (who serves as the Chairman), the Attorney General, a Justice of the Court of Appeal appointed by the President after consultation with the Chief Justice, the Principal Judge of the High Court, and two members appointed by the President.

Notably, individuals who are Members of Parliament or hold other specified offices are ineligible for appointment to the Commission. To facilitate its operations, the JSC has the authority to delegate its duties to various committees established in accordance with laws enacted by Parliament.
