The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is Tanzania’s oldest and most prestigious public university, located about 13 kilometers west of the city center on a hill known as “Mlimani.” Established on October 25, 1961, as an affiliate college of the University of London, it later became a full-fledged university in 1970 under Act No. 12 of that year. UDSM has since grown significantly and now comprises several constituent colleges, schools, and institutes that offer a wide range of academic programs.

As of the 2020/2021 academic year, the university had nearly 40,000 students, with women making up approximately 46% of the student population. UDSM remains a leading institution of higher learning in Africa, offering over 370 academic programs, including undergraduate, master’s, and PhD degrees across various disciplines. The university is known for its strong focus on scientific research and international collaborations, working with partners such as the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
