The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) is a research unit located at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in Mwanza, Tanzania. MITU’s mission is to improve health by developing and evaluating interventions for HIV and other health issues through high-quality research, including clinical trials.
It aims to strengthen research capacity in Tanzania and the East African region while helping to translate research findings into health policies. MITU envisions becoming a global leader in HIV prevention and treatment research, as well as research on other health problems, in collaboration with local and international partners to improve health in the East African region.
MITU is currently working with international research collaborators on a cohort study involving 500 HIV-positive adults and 500 HIV-negative adults. This five-year study will explore the relationship between sleep, autonomic nervous system activity, and 24-hour blood pressure variability.
