The bank’s history dates back to 1967 when the Tanzanian government nationalized all financial institutions, including banks.
In 1991, the banking sector underwent reforms, and six years later, in 2000, South African financial services group Absa Group Limited acquired a majority share in NBC. The Tanzanian government retained 30%, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, held a 15% stake.
