Job vacancies at UDSM, March 2025
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is Tanzania’s oldest and leading public university. Located 13 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, it spans 1,625 acres on Observation Hill, known as Mlimani in Kiswahili. Established on October 25, 1961, as the University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), it was initially an affiliate of the University of London.
For its first few years, it was housed in a building owned by the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) on Lumumba Street, Dar es Salaam, before relocating to its current site in 1964. At the start, UDSM had a single faculty, the Faculty of Law, with only 13 students, including one female, Julie Manning. In 1963, it became part of the University of East Africa, alongside Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya.
UDSM achieved full university status on July 1, 1970, through Act No. 12 of 1970. The university has since launched its Vision 2061, a strategic plan guiding its future growth.
