NMB Bank is one of Tanzania’s largest commercial banks, offering a wide range of banking services to individuals, small to medium-sized businesses, government entities, large corporations, and agricultural lending. The bank was founded under the National Microfinance Bank Limited Incorporation Act of 1997, following the dissolution of the former National Bank of Commerce.
This led to the creation of three entities: NBC Holdings Limited, National Bank of Commerce (1997) Limited, and National Microfinance Bank Limited. With 226 branches, over 9,000 agents (Wakala), and more than 700 ATMs across the country, NMB operates in every district of Tanzania. It serves over 4 million customers and employs more than 3,400 people.
The bank is listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, with its largest shareholders being Arise B.V., holding 34.9%, and the Government of Tanzania with 31.8%. NMB has been recognized as the “Best Bank in Tanzania” for eight consecutive years (2013-2020) by Euromoney and was named the “Safest Bank in Tanzania” in 2020 by Global Finance Magazine.
