Nafasi za Kusimamia Uchaguzi 2025. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Tanzania was established through legislative reforms in early 2024, transitioning from the former National Electoral Commission (NEC) as part of a broader effort to enhance the transparency and accountability of the election process. Headquartered in Dodoma and led by Chairman Jacobs Mwambegele, INEC operates under the guidelines of the 1977 Constitution (Article 74) and the Independent National Electoral Commission Act No. 2 of 2024. Its core responsibilities include voter registration, boundary delimitation, general and local elections administration, as well as organizing referendums and managing proportional representation seats for women MPs.
Already, INEC has launched a nationwide update of its Permanent Voter Register—incorporating mobile verification and online options—and initiated a delimitation exercise that added eight new constituencies to accommodate demographic shifts for the upcoming 2025 polls. Despite measurable progress in administrative reform and technology-driven improvements, INEC’s integrity and authority have faced serious contention. A 2025 Afrobarometer poll reported that about 79% of citizens still trust the commission—evidence of generally positive public sentiment .
Yet, the commission has also taken politically sensitive actions, such as banning the main opposition party, CHADEMA, from the October 2025 elections—citing its failure to sign the electoral code of conduct and drawing protests over constitutional rights infringement. CHADEMA has described the move as unconstitutional and an affront to democracy, and the party’s leader, Tundu Lissu was subsequently charged with treason. These developments have prompted criticism from human rights groups and opposition voices, sparking debates on electoral fairness and democratic space in Tanzania.
