Tanzania’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), formerly known as the National Electoral Commission (NEC), was restructured and renamed in April 2024 under the INEC Act No. 2 of 2024. Headquartered in Dodoma and chaired by Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, the body is constitutionally mandated (Article 74, 1977 Constitution) to register voters, oversee presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections, delimit constituencies, and conduct referendums.
In preparation for the October 28, 2025 general elections, INEC has implemented several key initiatives: digitizing the Permanent Voters’ Register to allow online verification (via phone or web), initiating a nationwide update campaign, and engaging 157 civil society organizations (including nine international groups) in public voter education.
