The National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Tanzania is an independent government institution responsible for overseeing the conduct of elections in the country. Established under Article 74(1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, NEC is mandated to supervise presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections.
Its key functions include registering voters, demarcating electoral boundaries, and ensuring that electoral processes are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently in line with the law. NEC plays a critical role in promoting democracy and good governance in Tanzania. It also provides voter education, certifies election results, and resolves electoral disputes.
To maintain neutrality, NEC operates independently from political interference and is guided by a Chairperson and Commissioners appointed according to constitutional provisions. By strengthening electoral integrity and public trust, NEC contributes significantly to the stability and democratic development of the nation.
