National Institute of Transport (NIT) is a leading public higher learning institution in Tanzania, situated in the Ubungo Light Industrial Area of Dar es Salaam. Established in 1975 under the NIT Act Cap 187, the institute operates under the Ministry of Transport and is fully accredited by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET). NIT offers a wide range of programs, including certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees, covering various aspects of transport and logistics.
The institution boasts over 16,000 long-programme students and is renowned for its specialized training in aviation, maritime, road, rail, and pipeline transport. NIT is also an IATA Authorized Training Centre, providing courses in airline marketing, customer service, and airport operations. In line with its vision to become a center of excellence, NIT is undergoing significant infrastructure development, including the construction of new buildings funded by the World Bank’s East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) .
The Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) is a premier public institution in Tanzania dedicated to maritime education and training. Established by Act of Parliament No. 22 of 1991, DMI evolved from the Dar es Salaam Maritime Training Unit (DMTU), which was founded on July 3, 1978, under the Ministry responsible for maritime affairs to fulfill the need for well-trained and certified seafarers for the country
