Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti and operates the Geita Gold Mine in Tanzania. Located in the Geita Region, the mine is situated in the Lake Victoria goldfields, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Mwanza city. It is one of the largest gold mines in Africa. Since its establishment in 2000, the Geita Gold Mine has produced over 40 million ounces of gold.
Owned entirely by AngloGold Ashanti, the Tanzanian government holds a 16% free-carried interest in the mine. The operation is an open-pit mine with multiple pits and features a processing plant. Gold extraction involves a combination of gravity concentration and cyanide leaching. The mine has made a significant impact on the local economy.
It provides direct employment to thousands of workers and supports various local businesses and suppliers. Geita Gold Mine has also initiated community development projects, focusing on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood programs.
