Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) is a private, not-for-profit healthcare system operating under the broader Aga Khan Development Network. With roots dating back to 1929, AKHST has evolved into one of the country’s most respected healthcare providers, offering a wide range of services through its two main hospitals—Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam and Aga Khan Hospital in Mwanza—alongside a network of more than 20 outreach health centres across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
The flagship hospital in Dar es Salaam is the only Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospital in the country, and its laboratories are accredited by SADCAS, reflecting its commitment to international standards and patient safety. AKHST delivers both preventive and curative healthcare services, ranging from primary care and maternal-child health to specialized tertiary care such as cardiology, oncology, surgery, and advanced diagnostics.
In addition to its clinical services, the organization is heavily involved in medical education, running postgraduate training programs in partnership with Aga Khan University. It also plays a leading role in public–private partnerships, including initiatives like the Tanzania Comprehensive Cancer Project, which aims to improve cancer care across the country. AKHST was recently recognized as one of the Best Large Taxpayers in the Ilala region, underscoring its strong compliance with national standards and its critical role in advancing public health in Tanzania.
