The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a farmer-centered, African-led institution that works to transform agriculture across the continent by increasing the productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers. Founded in 2006 through a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, AGRA supports efforts to build more resilient and inclusive food systems.
It focuses on strengthening seed systems, improving soil health, expanding access to markets and finance, and enhancing policy environments to support sustainable agricultural development. Operating in multiple African countries, AGRA collaborates with governments, private sector players, research institutions, and civil society organizations to implement its programs.
Its holistic approach is designed to empower small-scale farmers—especially women and youth—by giving them the tools and support needed to increase yields, reduce poverty, and improve food security. Through innovation, capacity building, and policy engagement, AGRA aims to contribute to Africa’s broader development goals, including reducing hunger and promoting economic growth through agriculture.
