Bagamoyo Sugar Limited (BSL) is a modern sugar manufacturing company in Tanzania, established on December 1, 2016, under the ownership of the Bakhresa Group — one of the leading industrial conglomerates in East Africa. The factory is located in Makurunge, Bagamoyo District, in the Pwani Region, and spans over 10,000 hectares dedicated to sugarcane farming and industrial infrastructure. In its first phase, BSL has a production capacity of between 30,000 and 35,000 metric tons of sugar per year.
The plant uses state-of-the-art technology sourced from India and advanced irrigation systems from Israel, aiming to maximize productivity and efficiency.
BSL is a key component of Tanzania’s national strategy to reduce dependency on imported sugar and achieve self-sufficiency. The government targets a surplus in sugar production by 2027, and BSL is expected to increase its output to 100,000 metric tons annually upon completion of all development phases.
Beyond production, the project has significantly contributed to local employment—over 1,000 people have been directly employed in the first phase. Through its out-grower program, the company also supports smallholder farmers by providing technical assistance and guaranteed market access, helping to uplift rural economies and strengthen community livelihoods.
