North Mara Gold Mine Limited, located in the Tarime District of the Mara Region in northwestern Tanzania, is a significant gold-producing operation consisting of the Nyabirama open pit and the Gokona underground mine. Commercial production began in 2002, and in 2019, operational control was transferred to Barrick Gold Corporation through its joint venture, Twiga Minerals.

Barrick holds an 84% stake, while the Government of Tanzania retains a 16% free-carried interest. The mine processes approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore daily and is a key part of Barrick’s Tanzanian mining portfolio. The mine has contributed substantially to Tanzania’s economy, with investments exceeding $2.8 billion since 2019 and a strong emphasis on local employment and infrastructure development.

However, it has also faced serious scrutiny over allegations of human rights violations involving the use of police for mine security. Reports have documented incidents of fatalities and injuries among community members, leading to legal challenges and international criticism. While the company disputes these allegations and emphasizes ongoing efforts to improve security and community relations, concerns remain among human rights organizations and local stakeholders.
