Equity Bank operates under Equity Group Holdings Limited, a leading East African financial services provider headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded as the Equity Building Society in 1984, Equity expanded organically and through strategic acquisitions to become a pan‑regional banking powerhouse, with subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In Tanzania, Equity Bank Tanzania Limited launched operations in February 2012 and has steadily grown from a couple of branches to around 15 across major cities—including Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Zanzibar, and Dodoma—as of 2024–2025.
In recent years, the Equity Group’s performance has surged thanks to a dual focus on digital transformation and regional expansion. As of Q1 2025, the Group posted a profit after tax of KSh 15.4 billion (approximately US 117 million), with nearly half its assets and profits generated outside Kenya.
In Tanzania specifically, deposits rose 14%, loans grew 9%, and profit before tax increased by a staggering 540%, indicating strong recovery momentum. To support this growth trajectory and meet regulatory capital adequacy requirements, the Group announced a US $20 million injection into its Tanzanian subsidiary in 2025, reflecting confidence in the country’s market potential and strategic importance within the broader Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan.
