The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) is a voluntary, independent self-regulatory body established by journalists and media stakeholders on June 30, 1995, and began operations in May 1997. Its mission is to promote a free, accountable, and ethical media environment that supports democratic values.

MCT works to ensure adherence to journalistic ethics and professionalism, addresses complaints from the public through mediation and arbitration, and offers capacity-building through training, workshops, and seminars. The Council also monitors media performance and fosters public engagement to improve transparency and accountability in the media sector.

Over time, MCT has expanded its reach and influence, launching initiatives such as the Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT) and establishing a press freedom violations register. It has also played a critical role in advocating for media rights, including successfully challenging restrictive provisions in the 2016 Media Services Act at the East African Court of Justice.

In 2024–2025, under the leadership of Executive Secretary Ernest Sungura, MCT marked its 30th anniversary by hosting a major Pan-African media summit in Arusha. During this milestone year, Sungura was also elected Secretary-General of the World Association of Press Councils and Vice-Chair of the East Africa Press Councils, reflecting the Council’s growing prominence both regionally and internationally.
