Tanzania Commercial Bank (TCB), formerly TPB Bank Plc, traces its roots to the 1925 creation of the Tanganyika Post Office Savings Bank under British colonial rule. After separating from the Tanzania Posts & Telecommunications Corporation via the Tanzania Postal Bank Act of 1991, it rebranded to TPB Bank in 2017 and later adopted the name Tanzania Commercial Bank in July 2021 to reflect its expanded national commercial role, adopting the tagline “Growing Stronger Together”.

The government of Tanzania remains the majority shareholder (holding roughly 83%), with other stakes held by institutions including Tanzania Posts Corporation, Zanzibar government, employee funds, and cooperatives.

As of December 2023, TCB held total assets of about TSh 1.47 trillion (~US $570 million), and posted net income of TSh 10.7 billion (~US $4.5 million) in Q1 2024, positioning it among the country’s top-tier banks with around 82 branches and over 6,000 banking agents.

Under the leadership of CEO Adam Mihayo, appointed in November 2023, TCB has launched an ambitious strategic roadmap to become Tanzania’s third-largest bank within three to five years. The bank focuses on supporting SMEs, enhancing digital services, and improving operational efficiency.

It has disbursed approximately TSh 300 billion in loans targeted at small-scale entrepreneurs, government employees, and agribusiness clients through partnerships with Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB), offering interest rates between 9% and 14% and processing government employee loans in as fast as two hours.

TCB also upgraded its in-house internet banking system, fully integrated with national payment systems—an innovation implemented at no external development cost—to boost digital accessibility across Tanzania.
