The School of St Jude, located in Arusha, Tanzania, is a non-denominational, charity-funded independent school committed to the motto “Fighting Poverty Through Education.” Founded in 2002 by Australian humanitarian Gemma Sisia, it began with just three students and one volunteer teacher.
Today, the school educates approximately 1,800 academically gifted children annually, offering free primary and secondary education to students from disadvantaged backgrounds across three campuses: Sisia Campus, Smith Campus, and Moivaro Boarding Campus. The school runs a robust scholarship program covering tuition, boarding, meals, transport, uniforms, and learning materials, ensuring students have what they need to thrive academically and personally.
With over 1,400 boarding students and a largely local workforce of approximately 300 Tanzanian staff, it also injects significant economic benefit into the community, sourcing goods and services locally and supporting local families through employment and commerce. In addition to classroom learning, St Jude’s operates the Beyond St Jude’s Scholarship Program (BSJSP), which enables graduates to complete a Community Service Year in government schools before pursuing higher education with scholarship support.
