Founded in 1967, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) combines human, financial, and technical resources to tackle the challenges faced by the world’s poorest and most marginalized communities. The foundation focuses on investing in human potential, creating opportunities, and enhancing the overall quality of life.
AKF operates in six key areas, with a commitment to gender equality and inclusion across all programs: Agriculture and Food Security, Economic Inclusion, Education, Early Childhood, Health and Nutrition, and Civil Society. For more than 50 years, AKF has collaborated with communities in some of the most remote regions of Asia and Africa to improve living standards across generations.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, AKF operates primarily in the field, with program units in countries including Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, and others. The foundation has pioneered the Multi-Input Area Development (MIAD) approach, which integrates the resources and expertise of various AKDN agencies to deliver coordinated social, economic, and cultural interventions in specific areas to accelerate long-term development.
