The Alliance of Biodiversity and CIAT has been active in Tanzania since the mid-1980s, operating under the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) within the Ministry of Agriculture at the Selian station near Arusha. Over the years, our work in Tanzania has focused on various areas, including common bean breeding, seed systems, forages, soil health, value chains, and digital phenotyping. We are also making significant strides in strengthening resilience to climate change.

The Alliance collaborates with a wide range of local, national, and international partners across Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa, involving both public and private sectors. As part of CGIAR, a global research partnership aimed at ensuring food security, the Alliance is dedicated to reducing poverty, improving food and nutrition security, and enhancing natural resources and ecosystem services. One of the primary objectives of our Tanzania office is the development of new, climate-resilient bean varieties.

The Bean Programme stands out as one of our key achievements in Tanzania. Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are crucial to the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the country, serving as a vital crop for food security, nutrition, and income generation. As the leading legume crop in Tanzania, beans make up 78% of all cultivated legumes, with nearly 6 million rural households relying on them for daily sustenance.
