The Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania aims to promote Ireland’s values and interests by supporting peace, prosperity, and equality, with a particular focus on women and girls in Tanzania. For the period 2022-2026, the Embassy has two main strategic objectives: (i) to strengthen and expand Ireland’s political, economic, and cultural ties with Tanzania and other countries of secondary accreditation, and (ii) to support marginalized women and girls in Tanzania in realizing their rights and fulfilling their potential.

Ireland began its development assistance program in Tanzania in 1975 and established a Development Cooperation Office in Dar Es Salaam in 1979, led by Chargé d’Affaires Brendan Scannell. Ireland maintained representation at the Chargé d’Affaires level until 2006, when John McCullagh was appointed as the first Ambassador to Tanzania, coinciding with the state visit of President Mary McAleese.

The Ambassador to Tanzania is also accredited to Burundi, Seychelles, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the East African Community.
