Tanganyika Instant Coffee Public Limited Company (TANICA Plc) was initially founded as Tanganyika Instant Coffee Company Limited (TANICA LTD) on September 30, 1963, under the Companies Ordinance (Cap. 212) as a limited liability company.
The production of instant coffee powder began at the factory in 1967. TANICA remained a state-owned entity until its privatization in 2004. In January 2005, small coffee farmers from the Kagera Region, represented by their unions KCU and KDCU, alongside the Tanzania Federation of Co-operatives (TFC), participated in an open tender to purchase the government’s shares.
These smallholders, through their partner organizations, are dedicated to promoting coffee sales, organic coffee production, and fair trade. They are committed to ensuring the success of their investment in TANICA and believe the company can play a vital role in improving the welfare of small coffee farmers.
