The Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in 1989 and registered under the Societies Act of 1990. Although it gained official NGO status in 2019, it adheres to the NGOs Act of 2002.

The organization’s mission is to advocate for gender equality and promote human dignity and justice by engaging in policy development, community action, media involvement, and legal and institutional reforms. Violence against women and children remains a pervasive issue in Tanzania, with many women and children experiencing it daily. Addressing this violence is essential for the nation’s development.

It obstructs Tanzania’s economic progress, drains resources, and hampers the country’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, and other key national strategies and policies. TAWLA is a technical partner in the project “Building Rights for Improved Girl’s Health in Tanzania (BRIGHT).”
