Position: Country Manager, Tanzania

Location: Unguja, Zanzibar
Contract Term: 1-year, renewable
Salary: 6,500,000 TZS/month plus health benefits
Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Youth Challenge International works alongside young changemakers around the world to spark innovative, sustainable solutions for social and environmental impact. With programs in over 30 countries, YCI collaborates with youth and partner organizations to tackle complex challenges, using an approach that values quick learning, smart risk-taking, and practical action.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Regional Project Manager, the Country Manager will lead YCI’s HerStart program in Tanzania. This senior role involves directing program execution, growing YCI’s influence in-country, and ensuring strong, inclusive leadership of staff, partners, and volunteers. The position demands a results-oriented leader who can align project outcomes with YCI’s mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

Program Oversight

  • Foster a positive, high-performing team culture.
  • Manage full program delivery, including volunteer coordination and grant implementation.
  • Lead reporting, work planning, and human resource functions (recruitment, onboarding, performance).
  • Guide national strategies in communication, gender equity, and climate action.

Finance & Risk

  • Supervise budgets in accordance with donor and organizational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Tanzanian regulations.
  • Submit timely and accurate financial reports.
  • Manage risks and lead safety/security protocols on the ground.

Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Maintain and grow local partnerships to support youth and women’s empowerment.
  • Engage government, private, and civil society actors to create collaborative networks.
  • Represent YCI with professionalism, keeping headquarters updated and building strategic alliances.
  • Monitor local trends to adapt programming to emerging opportunities and challenges.

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the annual development and execution of the Country Strategic Action Plan.
  • Pursue new funding streams and public engagement opportunities.
  • Stay informed on current research and sector strategies.
  • Enhance YCI’s visibility and impact through external engagement.
  • Take on additional tasks as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in senior leadership roles, ideally in development settings
  • Proven ability to co-create and deliver donor-funded initiatives
  • Strong leadership and team development skills
  • Strategic planning experience with an eye for implementation
  • Skilled in budgeting and financial oversight
  • Background in community development and grassroots engagement
  • Passionate about supporting youth and women in entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Experience working with or managing volunteers
  • Ideally familiar with economic inclusion, gender equality, and climate-related issues
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Swahili
  • Must be a Tanzanian citizen or permanent resident able to reside in Zanzibar
