As part of its integrated health systems strategy, Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) aims to set up a total of 35 outreach health facilities across the country. To date, 19 of these clinics have been established and are connected to the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.

Career Opportunity: Head of Materials Management
AKHST invites applications from qualified, experienced, and motivated individuals to fill the following role:

Position Title: Head of Materials Management (1 post)
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer and Regional Director, Purchasing & Supply Chain Division

Overview of the Role:

The Head of Materials Management will lead the planning and execution of strategies that support AKHST’s healthcare delivery through efficient supply chain and materials management. This position is key to maintaining high levels of internal customer service and effective communication within the department.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee operational, financial, administrative, and technical functions related to materials management.
  • Set strategic direction for inventory control, quality assurance, and cost optimization across the supply chain.
  • Lead the procurement of advanced medical equipment by evaluating both local and international markets for the best value and quality.
  • Develop and manage the procurement and supplies budget in alignment with institutional financial planning.
  • Implement inventory control strategies to minimize stock holding, improve supply timelines, and increase cost efficiency.
  • Coordinate closely with warehouse, purchasing, and inventory control teams to streamline operations.
  • Serve as a technical expert and problem-solver for materials management issues, including vendor negotiations and staff training.
  • Prepare presentations and documentation for relevant committees including Purchasing, Product Evaluation, and Therapeutic Committees.
  • Monitor and control the end-to-end supply chain to ensure effective use of resources and compliance with financial protocols.
  • Ensure timely vendor payments to maintain strong supplier relationships.
  • Provide leadership and performance oversight to team members, guiding them in planning, budgeting, and day-to-day management.
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by supervisors.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Material Management from an accredited institution.
  • Registered with the Procurement and Supplies Professionals and Technicians Board (PSPTB).
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting, with 4 years in resource and materials management.
  • Proven experience in implementing new ERP systems for supply chain operations.
  • A minimum of 4 years managing healthcare inventory and warehousing.
  • Demonstrated involvement in performance improvement initiatives and compliance with safety, fire, and infection control protocols.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to align departmental operations with organizational goals.
  • Commitment to ethical practices, regulatory compliance, and upholding the organization’s mission and values.
