Laboratory Technician (4 Positions) – Ifakara Health Institute, August 2025

Summary
The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is seeking four qualified Laboratory Technicians to join its Biomedical Research and Clinical Trials Department. Successful candidates will be stationed in Bagamoyo, Kigoma, and Tanga, working within participating health facilities to support recruitment and follow-up of study participants, as well as carry out laboratory activities for ongoing projects. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate the collection of samples from designated health facilities.
  • Receive, label, document, process, and test specimens in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain proper storage and records of specimens.
  • Perform both routine and specialized laboratory tests required for the project.
  • Ensure laboratory cleanliness and adherence to equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Participate in Quality Control programs to guarantee accurate testing and regulatory compliance.
  • Update SOPs, manage stock inventory, order supplies, and maintain waste disposal systems.
  • Handle preventive maintenance and assist with administrative tasks as needed.
  • Work on-call when required and perform any additional duties assigned by the project leader.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant work experience.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in using COBAS 400plus analyzer, Sysmex XS 800i, microscopy, RDT, urinalysis, and basic microbiological, entomological, and parasitological testing.
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP).
  • Strong digital skills, including Microsoft Office and data management tools.
  • Excellent time management, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili.
