Kigoma-Ujiji Municipal Council, officially upgraded to municipal status on 1 July 2005, governs the urban district of Kigoma-Ujiji in western Tanzania, near the shores of Lake Tanganyika and bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Spanning approximately 92–128 km², the municipal area includes the twin historic towns of Kigoma and Ujiji, which together had a population of around 232,388 by the 2022 census.
As the administrative capital of Kigoma Region, the council oversees key transport hubs including the terminus of the Central Railway, port facilities on Lake Tanganyika, and an airport—critical infrastructure supporting both domestic connectivity and international trade with neighboring countries like Burundi, DRC, and Zambia.

Economically, Kigoma-Ujiji is characterized by fishing, informal trade, small-scale agriculture, and light industries. Fishing in Lake Tanganyika, particularly artisanal catch of endemic species like dagaa and migebuka, contributes roughly 30 percent of the local economy and provides employment opportunities for youth and women in processing and marketing.
About 75 percent of residents depend on informal trade, supported by markets such as Kigoma, Mwanga, Buzebazeba, and several satellite trading centers.
In recent years, the Council has initiated infrastructure upgrades—ongoing road paving under the national Kukuza Miji program, construction of modern marketplaces like Mwanga and Katonga, and drainage works to control erosion—reflecting efforts to improve public services and urban resilience.
