Role Objective:
The Tax Manager is responsible for minimizing the company’s tax risks while ensuring full compliance with tax and other statutory regulations. This role also helps maintain effective relationships with tax authorities and key stakeholders.
Reporting Structure:
- Reports to: Financial Controller
- Works closely with: Chief Financial Officer
Main Responsibilities:
- Tax Compliance & Risk Management:
Oversee all tax-related obligations including NSSF, mining royalties, city levies, and other statutory duties. Maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies such as TRA, local councils, and NSSF. - Primary Point of Contact:
Serve as the main liaison with external tax consultants and legal advisors, ensuring cost-effectiveness and high-quality service. - Timely Statutory Filings:
Ensure accurate and timely preparation and submission of all statutory returns, including Transfer Pricing documentation. - Accurate Processing of Deductions & Payments:
Manage the proper calculation and prompt payment of all taxes and deductions. - General Ledger Accuracy:
Ensure tax and statutory accounts are accurately reflected in the general ledger (SAP), with reconciliations such as Sales to VAT performed monthly. - Audit Coordination:
Lead all tax audits (TRA, mining, NSSF, etc.) from planning to completion, ensuring smooth execution and resolution of findings. - Resolution of Historical Tax Issues:
Assist in addressing past tax liabilities at the objection or appeals stages (e.g., TRAB, TRAT, Court of Appeal). - Maintain Payment Records:
Keep a comprehensive and updated record of all tax and statutory payments made since the company’s inception. - Other Responsibilities:
Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the Financial Controller or CFO, including strategic tax reviews and analysis.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
Technical Skills:
- University degree or equivalent with 6–8 years of experience in finance or audit (external audit experience is a plus)
- Professional accounting or tax certification (CPA, ACCA, ACA, or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of Tanzanian tax laws
- Proficiency in standard software tools and working knowledge of ERP systems, especially SAP (willingness to develop this within a year)
