The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station, developed by Elsewedy Electric, is a large-scale hydroelectric dam currently being built across the Rufiji River in eastern Tanzania. Despite initial controversy, the Tanzanian government approved the project in 2018. Once completed, the station will have a generating capacity of 2,115 megawatts and is projected to produce around 6,307 GWh of electricity per year—enough to power approximately 16.6 million homes and benefit around 60 million people nationwide.
Located within Stiegler’s Gorge in the Selous Game Reserve, the project is designed not only to supply renewable energy but also to mitigate deadly flooding events that have historically caused significant damage to lives and the economy. This initiative supports the majority of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals by efficiently managing water resources, creating thousands of employment opportunities, reducing the national energy deficit, stimulating economic growth, and attracting foreign investment.
The reservoir will support regulated fishing and introduce species like crocodiles and hippos, also turning the area into a hub for tourism activities such as water sports, fishing, and sailing. Additionally, the project contributes to environmental preservation by saving up to 400 hectares of forest each year.
