Underground Electrician at African Underground Mining Services (AUMS)

The Underground Electrician is responsible for carrying out all preventive, scheduled, and breakdown electrical maintenance across underground mining operations. Reporting to immediate supervisors and trainers, the primary goal of this role is to maximize equipment productivity and minimize downtime while upholding the highest safety standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Safety & Compliance:
  • Maintain a strong safety focus by conducting daily workplace inspections, pre-start checks, and Safe Work Instructions & Procedures (SWICs) to rectify hazards.
  • Comply strictly with all company health, safety, environmental, and operational policies.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping across all underground working areas.
• Underground Electrical Maintenance & Installations:
  • Perform scheduled electrical servicing, repairs, and fault troubleshooting in accordance with AUMS procedures.
  • Install and maintain mine communication systems (Leaky Feeder).
  • Install and maintain primary and secondary mine ventilation systems.
  • Maintain I-Kon blasting/firing lines and mine dewatering systems (including rebuilding Flygt and Stalker pumps).
• Equipment & Operational Efficiency:
  • Perform inspections and routine servicing on electrical tools and equipment to ensure they remain safe and fully functional.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, service sheets, and spare parts manuals.
  • Complete detailed service logs and notify supervisors immediately regarding parts used, additional inventory requirements, or equipment faults.
  • Liaise with the Underground Shift Supervisor regarding equipment availability and operational status.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Trade Certification & Education:
  • Recognized Trade Qualification / Certificate as an Electrician.
  • Basic First Aid knowledge.
  • Above-average numeracy as well as strong verbal and written English communication skills.
• Work Experience & Technical Exposure:
  • Strong background working in underground hard rock mechanized mining environments (highly beneficial).
  • Hands-on technical exposure to Sandvik drilling equipment (Jumbo, Solo, Q-Bex).
  • Demonstrated experience reading electrical schematics, troubleshooting, and executing maintenance procedures.
• Licenses & Personal Attributes:
  • Valid Tanzanian Driver’s License with the proven ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
  • Positive attitude toward labor-intensive underground tasks, with the ability to work autonomously as a self-starter.
