At the request of the Tanzanian Government, Bagamoyo Sugar Limited, a subsidiary of Bakhresa Group, was established on December 1, 2016, to cultivate sugar cane and produce sugar in the Makurunge area of Bagamoyo District. The project’s primary goal is to reduce reliance on sugar imports, achieve self-sufficiency, and create a surplus of sugar for export.
This marks the first time such a large-scale project is being carried out in Tanzania. The sugar plant is being supplied by Thyssenkrupp India Pvt Ltd, a German company operating in India, while the farm’s irrigation system is powered by advanced digital farming technology from the Israeli company, Netafim.
The project is progressing according to plan, with commercial production scheduled to begin by mid-2022. In the first phase, the project is expected to produce around 30,000 tonnes of sugar. In line with the Group’s commitment to supporting the Tanzanian community, the project is providing job opportunities for thousands of unemployed youth in the Makurunge village.
