The Legal Intern provides essential operational support to the Legal Department at the Arusha Branch. Reporting to the Legal Counsel, this role assists with court registry filings, drafting litigation pleadings, monitoring police/fraud cases, maintaining collateral registers, and conducting legal research to minimize litigation exposure for the bank.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Litigation & Court Registry Support:
    • Draft legal pleadings and court filings for credit-related cases involving the bank.
    • Attend court sessions across local courts and tribunals, recording proceedings accurately for internal case files.
    • Execute registry follow-ups with courts and tribunals to track case progression and secure official documents.
    • Conduct thorough legal research and draft preliminary legal opinions on branch-related matters.
    • Maintain and continuously update the official Case Register (tracking active, incoming, and closed matters).
  • Collateral & Security Documentation:
    • Assist in drafting security documentation related to real estate mortgages and bank collaterals.
    • Prepare, update, and maintain the branch Collateral Registration Register to ensure accurate security tracking.
  • Fraud & Criminal Case Follow-Up:
    • Report financial fraud and criminal cases to local police stations and collect required supporting documentation.
    • Follow up on pending police cases and liaise with external legal counsel to prepare witnesses and evidence for prosecution.
Candidate Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a recognized university.
  • Work Experience: 1 to 2 years of practical exposure to legal practice, court registry procedures, or law firm internship/attachment.

Core Competencies & Physical Requirements:

  • Energetic, outgoing, and comfortable handling daily court visits, registry follow-ups, and police station visits.
  • Solid legal drafting, legal research, and case documentation skills.
  • Ability to work comfortably for standard full-time office/field hours (up to 8 hours daily).
  • High level of initiative, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
