Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) is a government agency responsible for managing the country’s correctional facilities. Its primary mission is to ensure the safe custody, rehabilitation, and reformation of offenders. The service oversees a network of prisons and detention centers across Uganda, with the aim of maintaining order, security, and discipline within these facilities. Uganda Prisons Service is also involved in providing rehabilitation programs to inmates, such as vocational training, education, and agricultural work, to help them reintegrate into society upon release.

The service is guided by the principles of human rights and focuses on ensuring that prisoners’ dignity is respected while working towards their rehabilitation. In addition to its core functions of detention and rehabilitation, Uganda Prisons Service plays an important role in the country’s national security. It works in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, including the police and the military, to maintain peace and order, especially in high-security situations.

Over the years, the UPS has also contributed to national development by engaging in agriculture, with many prisons operating large-scale farms that provide food for inmates and contribute to local economies. Despite facing challenges such as overcrowding and limited resources, the Uganda Prisons Service continues to focus on improving the quality of life for inmates, reducing recidivism, and promoting a more effective criminal justice system.
